You can keep an eye on how much larger you might want to grow your vassal(s) in your subjects tab. Some areas of the world have few or undesirable allies (I rarely ally anyone when playing Muscovy, because there are very few other countries in my religion group and who I don't want to conquer), whereas allies are much more useful than vassals in others (when playing within the HRE as a small power, for instance). The number of vassals you might want to have depends on how you see yourself using your diplo relation slots. As a bonus, you get a boost to your force limit that scales with the size of your vassal(s). Even if the culture/religion of the province is as hated within your vassal's country as it is in yours, you might prefer to have them deal with the unrest. Land that has cultures or religions that aren't tolerated/accepted in your country is sometimes better run by a vassal, who won't get the same penalties for owning it that you would, as long as your vassal has a different religion and/or culture than you do. Usually, this is in the early game before you pick up any bonuses related to tolerance, missionaries, or culture conversion. The other situation where you might want to feed a vassal is when you are conquering land outside of your religion or culture that will be difficult to convert. ![]() are all examples of countries that are better either vassalized or fed to one of your vassals rather than cored with admin. Georgia, Circassia, Brittany, Morocco, etc. Vassal feeding is also a good idea in areas of the world where countries have traditions that increase coring costs. Helping them get their cores back and then annexing them is a good way to save admin points (rather than having to do all the coring yourself) and also keep AE low. The best vassals for feeding are ones that you can release or obtain when they are small and have large numbers of cores that they don't currently own.
